POSITION: TRAINEE DESIGN ENGINEER
LOCATION: LLANGEFNI, NORTH WALES
We are looking for a committed and technically curious Trainee Design Engineer to join our engineering team, supporting the development of mobile machinery and defence‑related mechanical systems. This role is aligned with the Applied Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship and offers the opportunity to gain hands‑on experience designing equipment that must perform reliably in harsh environments.
You will work alongside experienced design, mechanical and manufacturing engineers, contributing to real projects involving ruggedised platforms and specialised mechanical subsystems.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering Support
- Assist in producing 3D CAD models for mechanical components, assemblies, and sub‑systems used in mobile and defence machinery.
- Producing detail drawings.
- BoM management through an ERP system.
- Support the development of robust, durable designs suitable for extreme environments, including vibration, shock, temperature and contamination.
- Contribute to design reviews, applying engineering principles and learning from engineers.
- Help ensure compliance with relevant defence standards, safety regulations and quality requirements.
Technical Development
- Apply academic learning to real engineering challenges such as load calculations, material selection, tolerance analysis, and mechanical performance assessments.
- Support prototype builds, mechanical testing, and validation activities, including environmental and functional testing.
- Learn to use engineering tools and software relevant to mobile equipment design (CAD (PTC Creo), simulation tools etc.).
- Assist in investigating engineering issues, supporting root‑cause analysis and corrective actions.
Project & Documentation Support
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports and engineering change records.
- Support configuration control and documentation processes.
- Collaborate with cross functional teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance and supply chain.
Apprenticeship Commitment
- Enrol and actively participate in the Applied Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship.
- Attend all required training sessions, university study days, and complete coursework to the required standard.
- Demonstrate continuous professional development and apply academic learning to workplace tasks.
Skills & Attributes
- Strong interest in mechanical engineering, mobile machinery, defence systems or heavy equipment.
- Good problem‑solving ability and willingness to learn from hands‑on engineering tasks.
- Basic understanding of mechanical principles.
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Attention to detail and a methodical approach to engineering tasks.
- Ability to manage time effectively and balance work with academic commitments.
- Eligibility to work on defence‑related projects.
Qualifications Required
- GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths, English, and Science.
- Level 3 qualification such as A‑levels, BTEC, or equivalent in an engineering or STEM subject (preferred).
- Eligibility to enrol on a Degree Apprenticeship in Applied Mechanical Engineering at Bangor University.
